September 15th is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 18, and September 21, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. The month-long celebration officially begins on Saturday September 15, ending on Monday, October 15. But, because Latinos love partying, for some the celebration starts days before and for others continues days after this dates.
